What to Expect at Your First Head Spa Appointment

Most people who book a head spa appointment for the first time have two questions before they arrive: Will I love it? and What am I actually supposed to do to prepare? The first question answers itself once you're here. The second one is worth getting into.

A head spa is not a traditional salon visit. It's a scalp-first, clinically informed approach to hair care — closer to a facial than a blowout. That changes how you prepare, what you wear, and what you should (and shouldn't) do in the days before your head spa appointment. Here's everything you need to know before your first time at Elysian.

One more thing worth saying before anything else: there's no wrong scalp to bring us. The intake process and scalp analysis aren't a performance review — they're how we understand what your scalp actually needs. Whatever you've been dealing with — buildup, dryness, oiliness, thinning, stress-related shedding — that's exactly what we're here for. You don't need to have been doing everything right. You just need to show up.

What to Wear to Your Head Spa Appointment

The most common question we hear — and the answer might surprise you: it doesn't really matter, because you'll change into a robe when you arrive. Elysian provides everything you need for your session: a spa robe, hair wraps, and a weighted or non-weighted blanket depending on your preference. You won't be in your street clothes for the treatment itself.

Clients are welcome to undress to their own comfort level. Most remove their shoes and top — for both men and women, removing your top allows full access to the neck and shoulders, which are part of the treatment. Pants are entirely your call. Whatever helps you settle in is the right answer.

A few things are worth keeping in mind when you get dressed that morning:

  • Comfortable clothing, loose clothing is ideal — nothing stiff or tight, which works against the relaxation you're here for

  • We do use a warm towel to remove any oil from the back of the neck, so we'd suggest skipping pure silk or cashmere just to be safe

  • Remove necklaces and large earrings before your session — smaller studs are fine

  • If you're coming straight from work or have somewhere to be after, that's completely fine — your clothes stay untouched while you're with us

The robe isn't just practical — it's part of the transition. Arriving in whatever you were wearing and stepping into something designed for stillness changes how your nervous system receives the session, contributing to a truly relaxing experience. Most clients notice the shift before they even sit down.

Where to put your things: You can keep all personal belongings with you in the room at all times. Please place larger items (bags, clothing) on the chair at the consult/blow dry table. Smaller items can go on the table beneath the mirror, and any garments may be hung on the hanger in the treatment room. Nothing needs to leave your sight at any point during your visit.

How to Prepare Your Hair

For a standard head spa treatment, arrive with unwashed, dry hair — ideally two to four days since your last wash. This isn't just a preference. It's clinical.

Your scalp's natural oils give our Treatment Specialists an accurate picture of your scalp condition before any product is applied. The buildup, sebum patterns, and natural oils present on an unwashed scalp tell us how your scalp is actually functioning — and allow us to tailor the treatment to your specific needs. Hair washed the same day doesn't give us enough to work with for a full, customized assessment.

A note on washing frequency: many clients arrive convinced they've been doing something wrong — either washing too often or not training their scalp enough. In reality, most people with dry-feeling hair should be washing more frequently, not less, and conditioning at least once or twice a week is essential for healthy hair hydration. If that surprises you, it's exactly the kind of thing your intake conversation is designed to address.

For clients booked for a FoLix hair restoration session, preparation is the opposite: arrive with clean, dry hair, free of styling products. FoLix uses FDA-cleared fractional laser technology, and unobstructed follicular contact is essential for the treatment to work as intended.

If you're unsure which prep applies to your service, call or text us at (512) 497-6855 before your visit.

A Note for First-Time Male Clients

For most men, a head spa is a completely new experience — and the services are designed with that in mind. Depending on your booking, here's what to expect:

For the Men's Restoration, the session includes an enzyme-derived exfoliation that helps products penetrate deeper into the scalp and skin. It's thorough, effective, and nothing like a standard salon visit. Men receiving the restoration also leave with a complimentary beard and hair comb — included with the service.

For the Retreat or Alchemist services, the scalp massage is typically the standout moment — clients often describe unexpected tingling sensations as circulation increases and tension releases. It's one of those things that's hard to explain until you've felt it.

For all services, men are welcome to remove their top and shoes for the treatment. Comfort and full access to the neck and scalp make a real difference in what the session can do.

A Few More Things Worth Knowing

Injectables. If you've had Botox or fillers within the past two weeks, consult your injector before your head spa appointment. Our head spa services include scalp massage and facial manipulation, and your injector can confirm whether the timing is right.

Recent chemical services. Color, perms, and relaxers don't disqualify you from a visit. Just let us know when you book so we can adjust your scalp treatment accordingly.

Questions about lice. It comes up more than you'd think, and the answer is straightforward: if you have an active lice concern, please reach out before booking so we can advise you on next steps. Our treatments are not lice treatments, but we're happy to point you in the right direction.

Arrive ten minutes early. We use that time for a brief intake — a conversation about your scalp health, hair history, any scalp issues you're carrying, and what outcomes matter most to you. It shapes everything that follows.

Parking. At our Clarksville location, street parking is available along Baylor Street. At our Central Austin flagship at 3408 West Avenue, opening in April 2026, dedicated parking is on-site. Running late? Call or text (512) 497-6855 and we'll take care of you.

What Happens During Your Head Spa Session

Every Elysian treatment begins with a scalp analysis. Before anything else, your therapist assesses your scalp condition — oiliness, dryness, buildup, density, and any visible concerns. From there, the session moves through a layered protocol designed around what your scalp actually needs: cleansing, scalp massage, targeted serums, and often steam, sometimes enhanced with aromatherapy.

The scalp massage alone is something most clients weren't expecting. The scalp holds tension the way shoulders do, and most people don't realize how much they're carrying there until it's released. The stress relief is real — and it's a natural byproduct of work that's primarily focused on scalp health, hair growth, and overall wellness.

This is what separates a head spa experience from a shampoo and scalp massage at a regular salon. The techniques, the timing, the product selection, the clinical lens — every element of the head spa treatment is intentional. Every step is there for a reason.

What to Expect After Your Visit

You'll leave with wet hair — that's normal and expected. Your stylist will finish the session with a wet style: product applied and your hair set in a braid or bun. If you'd like a blowout, we're happy to add one for an additional cost when time allows — just let us know when you book or at the start of your session.

If you choose to air dry, that’s actually the ideal post-treatment approach—especially after an exfoliating service. Your scalp will feel noticeably cleaner than usual, and that can last for several days. Air drying allows the treatment to fully breathe and continue working.

That said, we do lightly dry the roots before you leave—even if you’re keeping a natural, air-dried finish. This is intentional: gently removing excess moisture at the scalp helps support a balanced, antimicrobial environment while maintaining the integrity of the treatment.

If you do opt for a full blowout, there’s no cause for concern—we use low-heat, ionic technology that won’t cause damage or counteract your results.

Post-treatment, follow your normal shampoo routine. There's nothing special required — your scalp will simply feel cleaner and more balanced than it typically does.

One important tip before bed: never go to sleep with wet hair. A moist scalp overnight creates the conditions for excess oil buildup, bacteria, and fungal growth—and clients who skip this step often wake up feeling greasy or irritated the next morning, even after a great session.

Additionally, hair is significantly more fragile when it’s wet. The hair shaft swells with water, making it more elastic and prone to stretching, breakage, and friction damage against your pillow while you sleep.

You don’t need to fully blow dry. At minimum, rough dry the roots and scalp until the moisture is gone—ends can stay slightly damp. It’s a small habit that makes an outsized difference.

If You're Noticing Hair Thinning

For clients who've noticed changes in density, shedding, or overall scalp care concerns, Elysian offers a complimentary consultation — a $300 value — with Katie Wills, Nurse Practitioner and Certified Trichologist. It's a thorough, clinical conversation about what's happening at the follicle level and what options exist for your well-being and long-term hair health.

You can request a consultation when you book, or call or text (512) 497-6855 to set it up separately.

Your first head spa appointment is just a starting point. Most clients find their scalp — and their hair — responds in ways that build over time. The single visit is worth it. What tends to happen after a few sessions is worth even more.
