This wasn't the plan.

When we opened in November 2024 in a 100-year-old house in Clarksville, we weren't thinking about flagships or what came next. We were thinking about water temperature, consultation language, and whether the check-in flow made sense. We were folding towels, answering phones, and performing head spa treatments — sometimes all in the same hour.

We projected 70 clients in our first month and surpassed that number in our first week.

Fifteen months later, Elysian Head Spa has served more than 4,000 clients across Austin, maintained a waitlist that never fully cleared, and outgrown a space we genuinely loved. This April, we open our new flagship location at 3408 West Avenue in Central Austin — a standalone building designed from the ground up for scalp health, hair growth, and the kind of head spa experience we always knew was possible.

When you see it, you'll understand. It's perfect.

How It Started

Co-Founders Katie Wills, Certified Nurse Practitioner and Trichologist, and Co-Founder Laura Kirby in front of Elysian Head Spa on Baylor St, Austin, TX

For years, co-founder Katie Wills worked in critical care medicine. She understood physiology at a granular level — circulation, inflammation, stress response, recovery — and spent her career watching what happened when the body was pushed past its reserves, learning to read the signals long before a crisis arrived.

Eventually, she hit her own.

Seeking restoration, she traveled to Japan and booked the longest head spa treatment she could find. What struck her wasn't the length of the session — it was the reverence. The practitioner didn't treat her scalp like hair. She treated it like living tissue, stimulating circulation, supporting lymphatic drainage, and regulating the nervous system in a way that was clinical and deeply restorative at the same time.

She kept thinking: Why isn't this in Austin?

Co-founder Laura Kirby had spent years leading sales and training for medical skincare brand PCA Skin — and later brought that expertise into enterprise roles at Yelp and The RealReal. It was at Cosmoprof, the global beauty conference, that she saw consumer behavior shifting in ways that confirmed exactly what Katie was experiencing firsthand. Clients weren't coming in asking for shinier hair — they were asking about their scalps. They wanted answers, not just products. They were looking for someone with real expertise who could look them in the eye and tell them what was actually going on beneath the surface.

The category was underserved in a city that was more than ready for it, and the two of them decided to do something about it.

They chose a 100-year-old house in Clarksville with original wood floors, a historic oak out front, and a view of the Austin skyline from the back treatment rooms. It wasn't built for scale — it was built with intention. They opened with a soft launch, surveys in hand, adjusting water temperature, treatment timing, and consultation language based on what clients told them in those first weeks. Every iteration made it better.

What Nobody Told Us to Expect

The scalp is personal in a way that catches people off guard.

Hair is identity. It's aging, stress, and confidence wrapped into the thing people notice in the mirror every single morning. We've had clients cry in our consultation rooms — not from pain, but from relief at finally being seen and having someone take seriously what they'd been quietly carrying for years.

"There's no test you can fail here" is something we say to every first-time client, because the vulnerability of a scalp analysis is real. People deserve to know that walking through our door was the right call regardless of what they're dealing with — whether it's chronic dryness, product buildup they can't seem to shake, postpartum shedding, or something they've never been able to get a straight answer on.

We also didn't anticipate how quickly the Austin community would shape what Elysian became. Group appointments grew to more than 20% of our bookings — couples, friends, sisters, corporate teams coming in together to share the experience. People weren't just coming in for scalp care and stress relief. They were using Elysian as a third space, a place to connect over a head spa experience that didn't exist anywhere else in Texas.

That told us something important about what we were actually building.

What Most People Don't Know About Scalp Health

Scalp health and FoLix laser used on female client at Elysian Head Spa

Here's something that surprises almost everyone: the scalp ages up to six times faster than facial skin.

Environmental exposure, product buildup, mineral deposits from hard water, chronic stress, and hormonal shifts all quietly affect follicular health long before visible thinning appears. Hair rarely changes suddenly — it signals. Density shifts, increased shedding, dryness and irritation that won't resolve no matter what shampoo you try, texture that just feels different than it used to. These aren't cosmetic inconveniences. They're biological indicators that something in the scalp environment has changed.

And yet almost nobody in Austin — or anywhere in Texas, honestly — has a real answer for these concerns. Not dermatologists, not hair stylists. Even basic questions like how often you should wash your hair are surprisingly hard to get a straight answer on. Clients come to us having spent months trying serums and treatments they found online, and most of them made things worse rather than better.

That's the gap Elysian was built to close.

Our Treatment Specialists go through a certification program we created ourselves, training them in microscopic scalp analysis, deep cleansing, exfoliation, detoxifying buildup, and nourishing depleted follicles. They understand the difference between stress shedding, postpartum loss, perimenopause-related changes, and chronic dryness, and they know how to guide clients through building a scalp care routine that creates real, long-term improvement — not just a head spa session that feels incredible and then fades.

Scalp health is a practice, not a fix. Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. Hair follicles are living structures embedded in skin, and when the scalp is congested, inflamed, under-circulated, or chronically stressed, growth is compromised in ways that no topical product can fully override. Meaningful progress requires assessment, personalization, and consistency over time.

For clients dealing with more significant hair changes — thinning, patterned loss, telogen effluvium — our hair restoration program offers a painless, non-invasive, FDA-cleared laser treatment that supports the body's natural regenerative pathways without injections, chemicals, or downtime. It's the kind of early intervention that leads to stronger, more predictable results precisely because it starts before things get serious.

What We Offer

The Alchemist

Female client receives a corrective head spa treatment designed to manage dryness, excess oil, flaking, and more

The Alchemist is our corrective head spa treatment, designed for clients managing buildup, dryness, excess oil, flaking, irritation, or hair growth concerns. It combines enzymatic exfoliation, deep cleansing, steam, hot towels, customized Oway scalp treatments, and our Yume method Shiatsu scalp massage to restore pH balance, stimulate circulation, and address what's actually happening at the follicle level. Think of it as a full detox and reset for your scalp — the equivalent of a deep cleansing facial, but rooted in scalp science.

The Retreat

The Retreat is our relaxation pathway, built for clients who need to decompress and let the well-being benefits of a proper head spa session do their work. It's a slow, rhythmic scalp massage layered with aromatherapy, warm towels, a KNESKO gemstone mask, and flowing massage techniques for the scalp and neck that promote deep relaxation in a way that genuinely resets the nervous system. Clients walk in wound tight and leave somewhere else entirely — and that shift is real, not just subjective. Intentional scalp massage and nervous system regulation have documented physiological effects, from reduced cortisol to improved circulation.

Both pathways are available as 60-minute focused head spa sessions or 90-minute extended experiences that allow more time for consultation, questions, and treatment depth. The extended versions are especially worthwhile for clients with ongoing scalp concerns or anyone who wants the space to ask questions and leave with a real plan.

The Remedy

For clients who want the full picture, The Remedy is our most comprehensive service — a 100-minute ritual that integrates advanced scalp therapy with a full facial, lymphatic massage, dual masking for both hair and skin, and a carefully layered sensory experience that moves between warmth and cooling in a way that feels genuinely restorative rather than performative. Add a professional blow dry and it becomes The Ready, meaning you leave with everything done and nowhere you need to be first.

The Restoration

The Restoration was designed specifically for men, built around the unique needs of male physiology — thicker skin, denser follicles, higher oil production — and combines scalp treatment, beard conditioning, facial renewal, and therapeutic massage in one seamless session. It's also the service we recommend most for clients dealing with migraines and chronic tension, as the combination of targeted scalp massage, hot towels, and pressure point work tends to address what most people can't find relief for anywhere else.

We also offer a complimentary 30-minute hair loss consultation with Katie Wills — a $300 value at no cost — for anyone who has been noticing changes and hasn't had anyone to ask. It's a trichoscopic assessment that looks at follicle health, density, and growth patterns alongside contributing factors like nutrition, hormones, genetics, and lifestyle. You leave with a clear picture of what's happening and a personalized plan for what to do about it.

For clients ready to commit to consistent scalp care as part of their long-term self-care and wellness routine, our membership options — the Focused Loyalist, Extended Loyalist, Remedy Loyalist, and Restoration Loyalist — are designed to make that consistency easy, rewarding, and genuinely affordable compared to booking individual sessions. Members also receive retail savings, add-on discounts, and access to exclusive Elysian education and wellness events at the new location.

Why 3408 West Avenue

Our internal data showed clients were driving an average of 25 minutes to reach us in Clarksville. Elysian had quietly become a destination, and the original space — two treatment rooms and neighborhood street parking — was never going to be able to honor that properly.

We found the new space in April 2025 and worked tirelessly to bring it to life. The design language is modern country: elevated and clean but deeply interesting, with large windows, natural light, warm textures, and a sense of familiarity that makes it feel like it's been part of Central Austin for decades rather than something new trying to fit in. It was designed in partnership with Danyale Keim Design with nervous system regulation as a genuine priority — not just aesthetics — and the ergonomics of every treatment room were built to protect practitioner longevity alongside client comfort.

The space is also set back from the main road, which matters more than it sounds. Clients come and leave in a state of calm without stepping straight back into traffic. The transition out is part of the experience.

Twelve reserved parking spaces. Four head spa rooms that can accommodate groups of up to four at the same time — one of the most frequent requests we've had since day one. A dedicated hair restoration suite. And for the first time, a full facial and scalp facials menu as a third service category, built around the same clinical and results-driven philosophy that defines everything we do.

"We think about longevity for our clients and for our staff," says co-founder Laura Kirby. "Ergonomics were designed into every treatment room. We want to build careers here, not burn people out."

This is the space that sets the standard for every Elysian location that comes after it — who we've always been and who we've grown into.

The Timing Is Not a Coincidence

The Central Austin flagship opens just ahead of Mother's Day, one of our strongest and most communal days of the year, when groups gather to celebrate and share experiences together. It also marks the beginning of Austin's long outdoor season, when Barton Springs afternoons, lake weekends, and pool days bring increased exposure to chlorine, hard water minerals, environmental buildup, and UV that the scalp absorbs more than any other part of the body.

Consistent scalp care, deep cleansing, and detox treatments become just as essential as your summer skincare routine during this stretch of the year, and we'll be offering targeted scalp resets specifically designed to clear buildup and restore barrier health before issues compound — alongside clinically guided SPF solutions built to slow visible scalp aging from sustained sun exposure.

If scalp care hasn't been part of your warm-weather wellness ritual before, this is a good moment to start.

An Invitation

After 15 months of waitlists, the Central Austin flagship represents something bigger than a second location. It represents belief in a city that embraces both science and ritual, in a community that showed up early and kept showing up, and in the idea that when care is consistent and intentional, it compounds.

Because hair is never just hair.

And the parking really is great.

Come see us soon at 3408 West Avenue, Austin, TX 78705.
